Peace Sign: Responding to complaints from Chatsworth residents, city officials have agreed to remove a large traffic sign erected less than three months ago at the corner of Winnetka Avenue and Devonshire Street. A smaller version will go up in its place (B3). . . . “I’m looking forward to seeing the Santa Susana Mountains again,” quipped Lenora Brokaw.
Cover Up: Hoping to jazz up the drab exterior of his bar, the Sports Star Garden in Tarzana, owner Jimmy Ravenna commissioned a mural depicting the bikini-clad dancers that entertain patrons inside. The mural was painted over recently at the urging of city officials, but Ravenna hopes to bring it back--with a twist. . . . “I’ll probably make them animals,” he said. “Bunny rabbits and girl cats, maybe the guys as dogs.”
Turning Pro: Lots of boxers, including himself, thought Lance Whitaker of Granada Hills would be spending this month at the Olympics in Atlanta. But it was not to be. . . . The 6-foot-8, 245-pound Whitaker, above, lost a pair of close decisions in the Olympic trials in April. Tonight, he’s making his professional debut in Beverly Hills (C6).
Car Crackdown: Think it’s no big deal if your car’s license plates are expired? Or maybe even your driver’s license? Would you believe there’s a special LAPD task force scouring the San Fernando Valley just for the likes of you? Penalties involve impounding your car--maybe for six months--and big fines and fees. It happens to as many as 7,000 Valley motorists a year. Crackdown result: lots fewer hit-and-run accidents. Solution to your problem: nearest DMV office (B3).
