The owners of the San Antonio Spurs rejected a $120-million offer to buy the NBA franchise from the former owners of the Houston Rockets.

Gavin and Joe Maloof of Albuquerque had offered $90 million with an additional $30 million for building a new arena.

Former Clipper guard Glenn “Doc” Rivers announced his retirement after 13 seasons in the NBA to become a TV commentator for Turner Broadcasting.

Morgan Wootten, coach at DeMatha High School in Hyattsville, Md., underwent a liver transplant after collapsing at his basketball camp last week.

Wimbledon runner-up MaliVai Washington and Olympic champion Marc Rosset were ousted in the first round of the Swiss Open at Gstaad, Switzerland.

Washington lost to Francisco Clavet of Spain, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1, and Rosset was beaten by German qualifier Oliver Gross, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

In other matches, defending champion Yevgeny Kafelnikov defeated Spain’s Roberto Carretero, 7-5, 6-1; sixth-seeded Alberto Costa of Spain beat Slava Dosedel of the Czech Republic, 6-7 (0-7), 7-5, 7-6 (11-9); Renzo Furlan of Italy defeated Jakob Hlasek of Switzerland, 7-6 (7-1) 6-7 (3-7), 6-4; Argentina’s Hernan Gumy beat Emilio Alvarez of Spain, 6-4, 6-3; and Karim Alami of Morocco beat Argentine qualifier Andres Zingman, 6-2, 3-6, 7-5.

Stefan Edberg of Sweden beat American qualifier Jack Waite, 6-2, 6-2, in the first round of the Swedish Open at Bastad, Sweden.

Edberg is playing his last Swedish Open. He will retire after the Stockholm Open in October.

Fifth-seeded Andrei Medvedev of Ukraine downed Alexander Volkov of Russia, 6-3, 6-4, in another first-round match.

Top-seeded Byron Black used a strong serve to defeat South African qualifier Robbie Koenig, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2, and advance to the quarterfinals of the Miller Lite Hall of Fame Tennis Championships at Newport, R.I.

Black fared far better than the fourth- and fifth-seeded players in North America’s only professional grass-court tournament.
