Wave Might Have Begun With Foreman in 1968
Regarding Bill Dwyre’s commentary, “We Take the Games Up Close and Personally”:
Long before Bruce Jenner waved the flag after winning the Montreal decathlon in 1976, George Foreman brought joy to the hearts of many patriots by waving his little Stars and Stripes in the ring after winning the Olympic heavyweight crown in Mexico City in 1968. It came at a much more delicate time in the matter of boosting USA morale as it was in stark contrast to the 1968 black-glove demonstration. TV got all that too. What a country.
