It was gratifying to read Don Heckman’s tribute to Louis Armstrong (“Beyond Satchmo,” June 30) and sobering to be reminded that the great musician left us a quarter-century ago.
Unfortunately, not once was the name of the trumpet player’s greatest associate mentioned, that of pianist Earl Hines, who contributed so valuably to so many Armstrong recordings, including the two most often cited among jazz masterpieces, “West End Blues” and “Weather Bird.”
