Peirsol’s time of 1 minute 3.6 seconds broke the 11-12 age-group record of 1:03.83, set in 1994 by David Chan of Central California.

“This was my last chance to break the record,” said Peirsol, 12. “I age-up next week so I knew I had to do it this time.”

Peirsol swims with the Irvine Novaquatics, the same club for which Olympian Amanda Beard swims.
