John Campbell Bruce; Author of Alcatraz Book

John Campbell Bruce, 90, journalist and author of the book “Escape From Alcatraz.” The book was made into a movie of the same title starring Clint Eastwood in 1979. It was an account of an actual 1962 breakout from the former island prison--also called “the Rock”--in San Francisco Bay. A native of Helvetia, Pa., Bruce served with the Office of War Information in China during World War II. Under the byline J. Campbell Bruce, he wrote features for the San Francisco Chronicle and for the now-defunct San Francisco Call-Bulletin and San Jose News. A lecturer and journalism teacher at UC Berkeley, Bruce also wrote a book about immigration, “The Golden Door,” and plays including “Paint the House White.” On July 6 in Berkeley.
