Bullfrogs Rehire Stowers as Their Radio Announcer

Radio announcer Lew Stowers, fired less than two weeks ago by the Bullfrogs, will be back in the broadcast booth tonight when Anaheim plays a Roller Hockey International game at San Jose.

Stowers was let go after the July 8 broadcast of the league’s all-star game because he refused to take a one-third pay cut as part of cost-cutting measures instituted by the Silver family, which owns the Bullfrogs.

Rich Herrera replaced Stowers and worked the last two games on KPLS-AM, but after complaints from listeners, Bullfrog players and coaches, team founder Maury Silver reconsidered and reached agreement with Stowers late Wednesday.

“I’m just so touched by all the support I received from the fans,” said Stowers, who celebrated his 40th birthday Thursday. “This is the best birthday present I have ever had.”

The Silvers were vacationing in Canada and could not be reached for comment, but Bullfrog spokesman Rex Fontenot confirmed that Stowers has been rehired. Stowers said he will receive the same salary as before he was released, which is believed to be about $300 a game, plus travel expenses.

Still undecided is the fate of analyst Charlie Simmer, a former King player who is part of the Mighty Ducks’ broadcasting team. Simmer asked for a leave of absence in early June for personal reasons. Stowers said Thursday he hoped Simmer would return shortly.

Former General Manager Bob Elder is no longer with the club after his demands for more control of the front office and a salary increase weren’t met. However, Nelson Silver, Maury’s son, has been trying to persuade Elder to return, perhaps in a lesser capacity.
