Still Waiting for Dodgers to Get Things Together

Share

Let me see if I’ve got this straight: Fred Claire exposes second baseman Eric Young to the expansion draft in 1993, where he is claimed by the Rockies. To compensate for his shortsightedness, our resident genius then trades Pedro Martinez to the Expos for Delino DeShields.

Two outstanding players who have performed exceptionally well for their new teams in return for one player whose claim to fame is that he can neither hit nor field. Is it any wonder that Tommy Lasorda’s next job with the Dodgers should be as general manager?

Dodger fans must be relieved to learn that all this overpaid and underachieving team really needed to reach its true potential was a change of managers, and that the right guy was sitting on the bench all the time. Bill Russell, overrated and whiny as a player (35 crucial errors a year, 35 lame excuses) seems like a perfect match for a .500 team with an excuse, it seems, for every run the opposition scores.
