MY OLD MAN AND THE SEA ...

MY OLD MAN AND THE SEA by David Hays & Daniel Hays (HarperPerennial: $10.; 223 pp., illustrated). Writing in alternate chapters, David Hays and his son, Daniel, recount their daunting voyage around Cape Horn in a 25-foot sailboat. Although both men were experienced sailors, the stormy waters at the tip of South America are notoriously difficult to navigate, even in large vessels. Their account of the father-son bond they established during the grueling voyage is warm and affirming, but many readers will conclude the Hayses were nuts to attempt such a dangerous trip.
