Gerson Zelman, 83, of Camarillo, a retired associate editor at Newsweek magazine, has died.

Zelman was born Nov. 6, 1912, in the Bronx, N.Y. Raised in the Bronx, Zelman’s first job was in the research department of the New York Public Library, his wife, Libby, said.

He left the library to join the Army and served in the Signal Service Battalion 3112. Zelman was honorably discharged from the Army on Dec. 23, 1945.

Zelman began his 44-year career at Newsweek as a researcher, his wife said. He was named assistant editor, and later associate editor, a position he held until his retirement in 1981, at the age of 69.

Zelman and his wife were married 49 years, having met in the “mountains of New York,” she said.

They moved to the West Coast from New York in 1993 to be close to their children and grandchildren.

Zelman was a good athlete and especially enjoyed tennis, his wife said, but hip problems prevented him from playing with as much zest as he would have liked.

The couple traveled to Montreal each year to visit her parents.

Zelman is survived by his wife; a son, Richard, of Thousand Oaks; and a daughter, Nancy Feath, of Ventura.

He is also survived by five grandchildren, Julie Zelman, Sara Zelman and David Zelman, all of Thousand Oaks, and twins Kory Feath and Joshua Feath of Ventura.
