Rookie center fielder Roger Cedeno, who has been left on the bench because of the emergence of Wayne Kirby, was optioned to triple-A Albuquerque.

The Dodgers, needing an experienced outfielder, plan to purchase the contract of outfielder Rick Parker from Albuquerque. Parker, 33, who has played parts of five major league seasons, batted .276 in 27 games last season for the Dodgers.

The Dodgers are planning to place third baseman Mike Blowers on the 60-day disabled list to make room for Parker on the 40-man roster. He will join the team in Florida for their three-game series starting Tuesday against the Marlins.

Cedeno, who’s batting .246 and struck out with one out and the bases loaded Saturday, has started only one game since June 28. He responded by going one for 29 with eight strikeouts.

Said interim Manager Bill Russell: “It’s in the best interest to him. The role that he’s in now is not good for him.”

Giant Manager Dusty Baker on the managerial style of Russell, who is 11-13 since taking over for Tom Lasorda: “He has a style all of his own, but they’re more aggressive now. You can see the difference.”
