City to Discuss Center Expansion Plans

Share

Another step in bringing about a $150-million expansion of the Anaheim Convention Center is expected Tuesday when the City Council considers a proposed agreement for architectural and engineering services.

City officials are recommending approval of a $7.1-million agreement with the St. Louis-based architectural firm of Hellmuth, Obata & Kassabaum Inc., which also designed the Pond of Anaheim and Coors Stadium in Denver.

The company’s conceptual design for the convention center expansion and enhancement calls for the facility to be nearly doubled in size, making it one of the largest such venues in the nation.

If the project goes according to plan, construction on the first part of expansion could begin next spring and be completed by the fall of 1999.

A study commissioned by the city concluded that the center needs to be substantially upgraded if Anaheim is to retain its market share of the lucrative convention and trade show business.

In other action, the council will discuss city policy regarding the right of council members to access work-in-progress documents and other materials prepared by staff members.

Councilman Bob Zemel, who requested the discussion, believes that such documents should be made available to council members when requested.

The meeting is scheduled for 5 p.m. at City Hall.
