Sprewell to Remain a Warrior

The Golden State Warriors re-signed free-agent guard Latrell Sprewell to a multiyear contract Monday.

Terms of the deal were not released, although the San Jose Mercury News reported he will earn more than $32 million over four years.

The Vancouver Grizzlies waived former Laker Byron Scott to create room under the salary cap to sign free-agent guard Lee Mayberry.

“We had to let Scott go. It’s really sad,” Vancouver General Manager Stu Jackson said. “I’m proud of the fact he wore a Grizzlies’ uniform.”

Jim McIlvaine, a 7-foot-1 free agent who was a backup with the Washington Bullets last season, signed a seven-year, $35-million contract with the Seattle SuperSonics.

“We’re not bringing him in here as a Shaq [O’Neal] stopper,” Seattle President Wally Walker cautioned. “We’re just bringing him in here as a good center.”

The Chicago Bulls and Dennis Rodman are still far apart in their negotiations. Reports say that Rodman initially asked for $14 million but has dropped his demand to $11 million. The Chicago Sun-Times reported the Bulls have raised their offer from $5 million to $6 million. . . . The deadline for point guard Rod Strickland to report for a physical examination with the Washington Bullets was extended to noon Wednesday. His apparent reluctance to take a physical has threatened to void the July 15 trade with the Portland Trail Blazers. . . . The Denver Nuggets re-signed guard Bryant Stith. . . . Cleveland center Brad Daugherty announced his retirement, allowing the Cavaliers to free his salary against the cap. . . . Free-agent guard Lucious Harris will sign with the Philadelphia 76ers, his agent said.
