City Council to Discuss Future of Breed Street Shul Today

A planned discussion by the Los Angeles City Council over the future of the dilapidated Breed Street shul in Boyle Heights was postponed until today because of a clerical error, officials said Tuesday.

Lawmakers plan to erect stronger barriers around the 1923 building, which was declared a city cultural-historic monument in 1988 but has since fallen victim to vandalism. Preservationists want to restore the synagogue as a museum. The congregation’s last rabbi, however, has tried to demolish the earthquake-damaged edifice, saying it would desecrate the structure to have it used for anything other than an Orthodox synagogue.
