Australia Wins, U.S. Finds Silver Lining

Even serious injuries to two top women riders couldn’t keep Australia from taking the gold medal in the team three-day event at Conyers, Ga.

The United States, led by the husband-and-wife team of David and Karen O’Connor, edged New Zealand to win the silver medal.

Australia finished the final show-jumping phase with 203.85 penalty points. The United States had 261.1, New Zealand 268.55.

Wendy Schaeffer of Australia, the competition’s leading rider, is still recovering from a broken leg she suffered two months ago.

Teammate Gillian Rolton didn’t ride Wednesday after breaking her collarbone and two ribs in a fall on the cross-country course the previous day.

But Rolton’s ability to finish Tuesday’s event put Australia in position to win.

In the dressage phase of the individual three-day event, David O’Connor remained in second place with 37.6 penalties.

Mary King of England leads at 31.6.

Americans who rode dressage included Mara Depuy on Hopper, fourth with 40.2, and Kerry Millikin on Out and About, ninth with 47.6.
