The U.S. Forest Service’s regional director recommended wild and scenic status Thursday for the Clavey River, long a Sierra battleground over hydroelectric dams.

Regional Forester Lynn Sprague said he will recommend that Congress grant the Clavey River east of Sonora wild and scenic status that would prevent construction of a dam, presumably forever.

Last year, the Turlock Irrigation District shelved plans to build a hydroelectric project on the Clavey River for now, but officials said the district would need a dam on that stream sometime.
