Caminiti Doubles Padres’ Pleasure

Ken Caminiti’s three-run double with one out in the 11th inning gave the San Diego Padres a 3-0 victory over the Florida Marlins on Friday at Miami.

San Diego’s John Flaherty extended his hitting streak to 26 games, the longest in the majors this season, with a double in the sixth inning.

Flaherty tied Gabby Hartnett (1937) for the second-longest by a catcher. Benito Santiago’s 34-game streak with San Diego in 1987 is the longest.

Luis Lopez led off the 11th with a single off Donn Pall (1-1). Rickey Henderson walked before Chris Gomez sacrificed the runners to second and third. Steve Finley was walked intentionally to load the bases before Caminiti doubled off the wall in right-center.

Trevor Hoffman (6-4) got the final five outs.

Montreal 5, St. Louis 1--Jeff Fassero pitched a three-hitter for his third complete game of the season, leading the Expos over the Cardinals at St. Louis.

Fassero (10-7) struck out 11, matching his career high, and walked two. He struck out the side in the ninth.

St. Louis, 2-7 on its 11-game home stand, has scored only 12 runs in its last five games. Donovan Osborne (9-6) gave up four runs and 12 hits in seven innings with a season-high nine strikeouts and one walk.

Chicago 17, Colorado 4--Tyler Houston drove in a career-high six runs and Sammy Sosa hit his league-leading 34th homer, powering the Cubs’ rout of the Rockies at Denver.

Leo Gomez added four RBIs, hitting his 16th homer. Chicago, which scored its most runs this season, had 17 hits off five pitchers.

Jaime Navarro (8-9) gave up four runs and nine hits in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out six and walked one.

Marvin Freeman (7-7) was tagged for seven runs and nine hits in three innings.

Cincinnati 7, New York 4--John Smiley and Bret Boone each drove in two runs in the fifth inning as the Reds prevailed over the Mets at New York and extended their winning streak to five.

Smiley (9-9) gave up five hits in seven innings, struck out four and walked three. The Reds (49-49) reached .500 for the first time since April 21, when they were 9-9.

Atlanta 2, San Francisco 1--Tom Glavine and two relievers scattered eight hits, and Marquis Grissom hit a tie-breaking home run in the fifth inning at San Francisco.

Glavine (11-5) gave up seven hits, matched his season-high with nine strikeouts and walked three. He left with two outs in the seventh and a runner on third, but reliever Brad Clontz got Matt Williams to ground to second. Mark Wohlers pitched the ninth for his 24th save.

Pittsburgh 7, Philadelphia 4--Jason Kendall hit a two-run double in the eighth inning to break a tie and help the Pirates defeat the Phillies at Pittsburgh. The victory extended the Pirates’ winning streak to five.
