49ers to Host 14 Games at Pyramid

Long Beach State has completed its 1996-97 men’s basketball schedule with 14 games scheduled for the Pyramid.

The 49ers open at home Nov. 25 against Wyoming, host Bethune Cookman on Dec. 30 and Southwest Missouri State on Jan. 9.

Key nonconference games include one with USC at the Sports Arena Nov. 30 and an appearance in the Purdue tournament Dec. 6-7, opening against Mercer. Cornell and the host Boilermakers also are entered.

They open Big West Conference play Jan. 11 at UC Irvine and return home Jan. 16 to host newcomer Boise State.

Five former high school boys’ basketball players from Orange County have been chosen to participate in the Third Southern California Summer All-Star Showcase at 5 p.m. Sunday at the Pyramid.

Josh Greer of Esperanza, Ike Harmon and Olujimi Mann of Santa Ana Valley and Dennis Keane and Allen Krist of Santa Margarita are expected to compete for the South team. Greer (St. Mary’s), Harmon (Cal State Fullerton), Keane (Southern Utah), Krist (Southern Methodist) and Mann (New Mexico) have made college commitments. Greg Clark of La Mesa Grossmont, who has signed to play at Long Beach State, is also scheduled to participate.

The North will feature Bellflower St. John Bosco’s Brian Johnson, who has committed to attend UC Irvine.

The game is being held in conjunction with the Summer Pro League Division I All-Star game, which will be played at 2:30, and the Pro Division II championship game, slated for 7:30.

North Huntington Beach FC plays the FC Greater Boston Bolts at 3:30 p.m. today in the final of the girls’ under-19 Snickers Cup national soccer tournament at Kuntz Memorial Stadium in Indianapolis.

North Huntington Beach, made up primarily of current and former high school standouts from Orange County, defeated the GSE Cardinals of Cincinnati, 4-0, in the semifinals Thursday. Former Marina High players Jennifer Benson, who has committed to play at Nebraska, and Kristen Palmer, who plays for Northwestern, scored for NHB. Former Santa Margarita player Erica DeVitis, who has committed to Nebraska, also scored.

The game will be shown by ESPN2 at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Orange County sheriff’s deputies and a collection of police officers from throughout Orange County will play roller hockey for charity Sunday after the Bullfrogs’ game at the Pond.

Proceeds from the game, which will be played at about 8:30 p.m., will benefit drug education programs in the county. Tickets, at $8 for both games, are available at selected sheriff’s and police stations. Benefit tickets will not be sold at the Pond. For information, call (714) 647-4593.

Sam Voita, a member of the 1994 and 1995 Saddleback College baseball team, signed with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, his father, George, said Friday.

Voita, who played at Point Loma Nazarene last season, earned all-conference honors at Saddleback. He has been assigned to St. Petersburg in the Florida State League.
