Feuer to Discuss Refurbishing Pool

City Councilman Mike Feuer will host a neighborhood meeting Wednesday to outline city plans to turn the aging swimming pool at Van Nuys-Sherman Oaks Park into a state-of-the-art, Olympic-size facility.

The City Council has earmarked $2.5 million in Proposition A funds to refurbish the park and rebuild the outdoor pool, which opened in 1950 and must close during the winter months because it is not heated.

The new pool will also be an outdoor facility, but it will be heated so it can remain open year-round, said Sharon Mayer, Feuer’s San Fernando Valley field deputy.

“This is an extremely popular pool. They get 400 people a day during the summer,” Mayer said. “But it’s become very run down because of its age. It’s very outdated, it doesn’t meet [Americans with Disabilities Act] standards and there are other problems.”

As part of the project, the city Recreation and Parks Department also plans to rebuild the locker rooms and re-landscape the area around the pool facility.

Mayer said the meeting will also cover long-term plans for the entire park. Area residents have lobbied for increased security lighting, rebuilding the senior citizens center, resurfacing the parking lots and other improvements. The city has not yet decided what improvements will be made to the park.

Wednesday’s meeting will begin at 6 p.m. at the park’s senior center, 5056 Van Nuys Blvd. in Sherman Oaks. For information, call (818) 756-8083.
