Chumash Center Plans Fund-Raiser

Out of money after a busy period entertaining children, the Chumash Interpretive Center in Thousand Oaks will hold a pancake breakfast Sunday to raise some much-needed cash.
“We need to raise money for the park,” said Paul Varela, director of the nonprofit center. “We’re not short of money--we have none.”
The center, located just off Lang Ranch Parkway near Westlake Boulevard, is in an oak-studded area of Oakbrook Regional Park that was once home to a small Chumash settlement.
The park features several cave paintings dating back 6,000 years. Varela, who traces his Chumash ancestry back 10 generations, frequently gives guided hikes explaining the Native American people’s former way of life.
Varela is already working on a bigger fund-raiser, the yearly Oakbrook Hutash Celebration on Sept. 21 and 22. But he said the center needs money for support until then.
The pancake breakfast, which will cost $5, will take place from 8 a.m. to noon. For information, call 492-8076.
