An independent pathologist concluded that a Theo Lacy Branch Jail inmate who was found unconscious on his bed died of a brain aneurysm, authorities said Thursday.

The 44-year-old man, whose identity was not available Thursday, was breathing when deputies found him about 5 a.m. Wednesday and tried to wake him up. The inmate didn’t respond and was transported to UCI Medical Center in Orange, where he later died, deputies said. A pathologist determined the next day that the cause of death was an aneurysm, said Sheriff’s Lt. Tom Garner.

The district attorney’s office is investigating the death of the inmate, who was serving time for probation violation, deputies said.
