A man suspected of auto theft led police on a 100-mph chase on Interstate 5 and through neighborhood streets before rolling a car down a 150-foot embankment, officials said.

No injuries were reported.

Lynn Nehring, a spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, said the chase began about 5:30 p.m. when Laguna Beach police were alerted by a resident who told them he had seen someone driving his stolen car.

Police officers trailed the car to San Clemente where it was sighted by sheriff’s deputies who began the pursuit, Nehring said.

Traveling at more than 100 mph, the car’s driver led the officers north on Interstate 5 to Dana Point, then north on Coast Highway and other roads to Crown Valley Parkway near Marguerite Parkway in Mission Viejo, where it crashed over a metal barrier, flew 40 feet into the air and skidded down the embankment.

Sheriff’s deputies found the uninjured driver about 300 yards from the car hiding in some bushes, Nehring said.

Laguna Beach police were unavailable for comment.

The man’s identity was not immediately available.
