Officials Hope Rail Station Brings Boost to Area Economy

The opening of a Metrolink commuter rail station in northeast Anaheim this week is being praised by officials as a boost to economic growth and a step toward reducing freeway congestion and air pollution.

“The station is not only a transportation link for the city, it’s also a key component of an economic development strategy we have for that area,” said Elisa Stipkovich, director of the Anaheim Redevelopment Agency.

Stipkovich noted that up to 7 million square feet of new development can be accommodated in the city’s Anaheim Canyon Business Center, where the new station was built.

The goal is to attract 16,000 new jobs to the center over the next 15 years, Stipkovich said, “and we know that the traffic improvements will be one of the key factors in allowing that growth to occur.”

Funding for the $1.2-million Anaheim Canyon Metrolink Station was provided by the Redevelopment Agency. The new facility is in the Catellus Business Center at 1039 PacifiCenter Drive, west of Tustin Avenue between the Riverside Freeway and La Palma Avenue.

Sarah L. Catz, chairwoman of the Metrolink board of directors, estimated that daily train ridership will increase by about 160 passengers with the new station.

A free shuttle service known as ACE (Anaheim Canyon Express) links the new station with nearby businesses. The 17-passenger vans operate on four routes named after the suits in a deck of cards: spades, clubs, diamonds and hearts.
