Early Enrollment for School Is Urged

Share

Parents of kindergartners or students new to the Los Angeles Unified School District are encouraged to enroll their children before the 1996-97 school year starts in early September.

Some LEARN campuses with modified traditional calendars are already taking admissions; others will begin Aug. 15. Registration will continue until the first day of school Sept. 4.

Some schools with traditional calendars will begin registration as early as Aug. 15, but most will begin on Aug. 22. Registration will continue through the first day of classes Sept. 10.

Because area schools are able to make their own schedules, parents should call local campuses to find out about specific scheduling and preregistration dates, said Shel Erlich, communications officer for the LAUSD.

Families in areas with year-round calendars, which began July 1, should contact their area’s school for calendar track assignments.

To register, students should be accompanied by a parent or guardian and must show proof of residence, such as a utility bill, rent receipt or escrow papers.

Children must be 5 years old on or before Dec. 2 to enter kindergarten in the 1996-97 school year, and parents must be able to prove the child’s date of birth with a birth certificate, baptismal certificate, passport or other verification from a Los Angeles County public services agency.

New students from other districts should have official and complete school records, or a transfer form or report card, Erlich said.

All new students, kindergarten through high school, are required to provide medical records, showing updated shots against polio, mumps, rubeola and rubella, diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough.
