Strip Mining Opens Door to Eyesores

Share

Should the voice of the people play a role in shaping Ventura County’s land use policies? The most recent poll shows that 73% of our citizens want to see the county’s rate of growth slowed, and an overwhelming 91% want to see no further development in our greenbelt areas.

Yet the county’s five supervisors are poised to approve a strip mine right in the middle of Santa Clara Valley, that lovely green valley that connects Ventura to Valencia and other inland areas. A strip mine is not only incompatible with its surroundings but damaging to everything that already exists there.

Developers everywhere will flock to the county, knowing that if the Board of Supervisors OKd a strip mine in the middle of Southern California’s last unspoiled agricultural valley, there is no type of development it would not approve.
