A dozen candidates, including three incumbents, have put in their bids to run for three seats on the City Council this fall.

Mayor Dave Sullivan and Councilmen Tom Harman and Victor Leipzig, whose four-year terms expire this year, have filed nomination papers to seek reelection.

Sullivan, 59, an orthodontist, and Leipzig, 48, a college biology instructor, were first elected to the council in 1992. Harman, 55, an attorney, was appointed to the council in January 1995 to fill the seat of Jim Silva, who was elected to the Board of Supervisors.

Among the challengers are three residents who ran unsuccessfully in 1994: Thom Doney, 34, a school vice principal and businessman; Susie Newman, 53, a businesswoman, criminologist and a former city Planning Commission member; and Roy H. Richardson, 68, a community volunteer and a former Planning Commission member.

First-time candidates are Lou Baker, 58, owner of a car dealership; Chuck Downing, 39, owner of an insurance agency; and Michael W. DuBrock, 28, controller for a hotel corporation.

Others seeking council seats for the first time are Pamela L. Julien, 39, a businesswoman and president of the city’s Fourth of July executive board; Kevin S. Koder, 34, an electrical engineer who owns a manufacturing company; and Clint J. Olivier, 21, a college student, U.S. Marine Corps reservist and hotel front-desk clerk.

Also on the ballot will be City Clerk Connie Brockway, whose term expires this year. She is running unopposed.

City Treasurer Shari Lynn Freidenrich, appointed by the council in May to take over the post vacated by Donald L. Watson, who retired, will also run to keep her seat. Her opponent is Roger D. “Skip” Slates II.
