Deputies Quell Brawl at Pitchess Jail

Share

Twenty-seven inmates were injured early Monday after a brawl broke out between about 70 black and Latino prisoners at the Pitchess Detention Center.

What sparked the melee, which erupted just after midnight, is unknown, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Kimberly Unland. Deputies using rubber bullets and a sting ball grenade filled with rubber pellets quelled the brawl in less than five minutes.

Unland said 18 of the prisoners were treated for minor injuries at the jail’s medical ward. Nine inmates, requiring more serious treatment, were taken to the jail ward of County/USC Medical Center. Seven of those inmates suffered puncture wounds and lacerations.

Though the injuries weren’t life threatening, two men were still being held at the medical center for observation, Unland said.
