Twelve-year City Council veteran Sal Sapien has said he will not seek reelection this fall, but a number of other familiar names will be on the ballot in November.

Mayor William C. Estrada is running again, and two former members of the council are trying to make comebacks: Alicita Lewis-Younker, who first served on the council in 1970; and Don Martinez, who lost his seat on the council in 1994 after serving one term.

For the past three years, Lewis-Younker has been president of Stanton Neighborhood Program, a volunteer board that oversees the operations of the Neighborhood Community Center.

But her connection to the youth center on Beach Boulevard extends to her days on the council in the 1970s. While Lewis-Younker was mayor, the council decided to build the recreational facility.

Don Martinez was appointed to the Planning Commission after losing his council seat, and he now serves as chairman of the panel.
