After exhausting all leads, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department and the Tustin Police Department are seeking help in identifying who killed a Tustin resident.

Jose Ivan Maldonado, 34, who lived at the Monterey Pines Apartment Complex, was found shot to death in his car at 1 a.m. on May 13, said Senior Det. Eric Spidle of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

His car was found off the Corona Expressway north of the Riverside Freeway at Prado Dam.

The victim was last seen leaving a Santa Ana residence at 9:30 p.m. May 12. Police believe Maldonado reached the gated parking lot of his apartment complex where he may have been confronted by his assailant.

Maldonado had been confronted by two Latino men in his parking lot in early April. One of the men was armed with a baseball bat and accused Maldonado of dating the man’s wife or girlfriend. Maldonado denied the accusation and the men left.

Anyone with information about the homicide or the confrontation in April is asked to call Det. Spidle at (909) 275-2666 or Investigator Tom Tarpley of the Tustin Police Department at (714) 573-3247. Spanish-speaking callers should call Det. Phil Sanchez of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department at (909) 275-2666. Callers can remain anonymous.
