Retired Educator Joins County Board

A former regional administrator with the Los Angeles Unified School District assigned to the San Fernando Valley has been appointed to the Los Angeles County Board of Education.

Rudell S. Freer, who recently retired from the LAUSD after 40 years in public education, was appointed to the board for four years by Supervisor Yvonne Brathwaite Burke. She said she was enjoying retirement until she was approached about the position.

“I thought I’d give it a try,” she said. “It’s another challenge.”

Freer began her career in education as a teacher in South Los Angeles. She went on to serve as principal at Wadsworth Avenue, Cohasset and 9th Street schools, then taught master’s degree candidates for 13 years at Mount St. Mary’s College.

She retired in 1993 as supervisor of elementary and junior high schools in the San Fernando Valley and north-central sections of the LAUSD.

Freer, who said she is “old enough to retire, though not necessarily the mandatory age,” has always been on the administrative side of education and was looking forward to contributing to the policies made for school districts countywide.

“I’m one who has always been interested in improving the quality of education for children and adults,” she said. “If I can make some ideas in this to improve the climate in which to learn, I certainly want to do that.”
