School Farm Valued Up to $8.3 Million
School district officials finally have a price range for sale of Costa Mesa High School’s former farm. Now it is up to city officials to decide whether they can afford the $6.7-million to $8.3-million tab.
Officials of the Newport-Mesa Unified School District decided in May to sell the 18 acres of land surrounding Costa Mesa High School to help pay for repairs at other schools in the district.
Officials estimate that about $15 million in repairs are urgently needed at schools in Costa Mesa and Newport Beach.
The price range for the farm was set by an independent appraiser, who will give a final figure later this month.
Costa Mesa officials are seeking land to build parks and are considering the former farm, which would be converted to an athletic complex with a football field, track, soccer fields and basketball courts.
At its meeting Monday, the Costa Mesa City Council is set to discuss whether it can afford something in that range. However, no vote on the issue is scheduled.
