Two Chargers Have Knee Surgery

San Diego Charger offensive linemen Isaac Davis and Troy Sienkiewicz underwent knee surgery and could rejoin the team within a month. Neither player suffered ligament damage.

“We’re looking at a minimum of two weeks on both of them, with the possibility of [Davis] going as long as four weeks,” Coach Bobby Ross said. “That’s the worst-case scenario. We got a little bit of a break.”

Both were hurt in Saturday night’s 32-10 exhibition victory over Arizona. Davis started nine games at right guard last year and one game at left guard. Sienkiewicz has been pushing Vaughn Parker for the starting job at right tackle.

Oakland Coach Mike White named linebacker coach Fred Whittingham as defensive coordinator after John Fox’s surprise resignation over the weekend.

“I asked [Whittingham] to organize the defense, and to be ready to call the defensive signals,” White said. “We’re making this transition with the same system.”

The Pittsburgh Steelers signed free agent offensive lineman Jim Sweeney, who started all 16 games for the Seattle Seahawks last season after joining the team as a free agent from the New York Jets.

Indianapolis quarterback Kerwin Bell will probably sit out four weeks because of a knee injury, Coach Lindy Infante said.
