Barbara Srenco Brier; Former World Bridge Champion
Barbara Srenco Brier, 73, a former world bridge champion. With partner Waldemar Von Zedtwitz, Brier won the World Mixed Pairs Championship in Stockholm in 1970. At that time, her now-deceased partner was 74 and nearly blind, making it difficult for him to see the cards. Born in Philadelphia, Brier won two national titles, the Open Pairs in 1955 and Mixed Teams in 1965, and was runner-up three times. She was educated at Cornell University and spent many years teaching bridge in Miami. In announcing her death, Times bridge columnist Alfred Sheinwold praised Brier’s lifelong contributions to the game. On Friday in Philadelphia of complications after heart surgery.
