Oxnard’s viejitos, or “elder statesmen,” are sponsoring an anti-violence summit today at Peace Park on Meta Street.

The “statesmen”--members of the Viejitos Car Club--hope the gathering will begin the process of finding a solution to the ongoing violence in the city, said Francisco Dominguez, executive director of El Concilio del Condado de Ventura, a community service agency and co-sponsor of the event.

“We see this as a recognition that we need to be proactive to prevent the violence,” Dominguez said.

Some of the ideas already being considered include providing youth centers or recreation facilities, and events that focus on youth.

“Also, providing skills that go beyond getting a high school diploma, but allow youth to get a meaningful occupation,” Dominguez said.

The summit is scheduled 1 to 7:30 p.m. at Peace Park, 535 Meta St., and will include dances, music, a car show and candlelight memorial prayers for those youths who have lost their lives to violence.

Admission is free.
