Police have identified the 39-year-old man who was killed Saturday by SWAT team officers after a 6 1/2-hour standoff as Ramiro Valencia Perez.

Perez was shot to death and an officer was wounded in the arm at the end of the standoff, which began, police say, when Perez fired at police and then barricaded himself in his bathroom on West St. Andrew Place.

Police would not identify the wounded officer but said he was at Western Medical Center-Santa Ana in good condition. A police dog injured in the shootout also was recovering, police said.

Police went to Perez’s home at about 4:50 p.m. Saturday in response to a neighbor’s complaint about loud music. When an officer asked Perez to lower the volume, he became angry and fired a handgun, police said. That officer was not hurt, and a SWAT team of 20 officers surrounded the house, attempting to establish contact with Perez by phone.

SWAT officers then lobbed 12 canisters of tear gas into the house, but Perez did not surrender. About 11:15 p.m., police rushed into the house.

Perez, police said, had outstanding warrants for a kidnapping and other “domestic problems.”
