Hubbard Leads Giants as Bonds’ Streak Ends

Barry Bonds finally sat out a game, but Trenidad Hubbard provided plenty of replacement punch.

Hubbard subbed for an injured Bonds in left field and homered and tripled as the Giants defeated the Montreal Expos, 7-2, on Sunday at San Francisco.

Bonds made pinch-hit appearances in the Giants’ two previous games while resting his strained left hamstring. But this time he did not play, ending the longest consecutive-games streak in San Francisco history at 357 games, and stopping the longest active streak behind Cal Ripken’s record string.

Osvaldo Fernandez (6-13) gave up seven hits, struck out eight and walked one.

San Diego 11, Philadelphia 2--Steve Finley went four for five and drove in three runs at San Diego as the Padres maintained their one-game lead over the Dodgers in the West.

Jody Reed matched a career-high with three runs batted in for San Diego.

The Padres scored three times in the first on a triple by Finley, Ken Caminiti’s double and a run-scoring single by John Flaherty.

Colorado 13, Pittsburgh 9--Vinny Castilla homered twice and drove in four runs as the Rockies came back from an early five-run deficit at Denver.

Jeff King had a career-high five hits, including his 26th homer. His two-run double helped the Pirates take a 5-0 lead in the first inning.

But the Rockies rallied as Castilla hit his 33rd and 34th home runs. Larry Walker hit his 18th homer and also drove in four runs, and Ellis Burks hit his 36th homer and drove in three.

Chicago 3, Atlanta 2--Brian McRae drove in the go-ahead run with a two-out double against Mark Wohlers in the ninth inning at Atlanta.

Scott Servais singled to lead off the ninth against Wohlers (1-3). One out later, he moved to second on a groundout, and took third on a wild pitch. McRae then doubled off the right-field wall.

Kevin Foster (5-2) limited the Braves to two runs and six hits in eight innings. He also singled in the tying run in the seventh.

Houston 4, St. Louis 1--Donne Wall (8-4) pitched seven innings and Jeff Bagwell surpassed 100 RBIs as the Astros opened a 1 1/2-game lead in the Central at Houston.

Wall gave up three hits, struck out seven and walked two.

Bagwell’s third-inning homer, his 28th, over the left-field fence gave him 100 RBIs this season. He joined Derek Bell as the only two Astros to reach the 100-RBI plateau in the same season. Bell has 102.

Florida 6, Cincinnati 5--Rookie Edgar Renteria’s two-out single in the bottom of the ninth scored Jesus Tavarez to lead the Marlins at Miami.

Pinch-hitter Tavarez hit a two-out ground-rule double against Lee Smith (3-3), and after Luis Castillo walked, Renteria greeted Jeff Brantley with a single between the third baseman and shortstop. Tavarez scored without a throw.
