Cal Lutheran Plans Fall Cultural Events

Cal Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks has unveiled its fall cultural events calendar stocked with plays, festivals and a lecture series called “Searching for Common Ground” that will include an appearance by acclaimed author Amy Tan.

“They are looking at unity from a global perspective in terms of people from other nations and the United States coming together and working in harmony,” said university spokeswoman Lynda Fulford about the lecture series.

The university’s first event is the opening academic convocation at 10 a.m. Sept. 4, when students, faculty and administrators will celebrate the start of the new school year.

James Sauceda, an associate professor at Cal State Long Beach and a third-generation Mexican American, will launch the university’s special lecture series with a talk entitled “Crisscrossing Cultures: Enacting the Promise of Plurality.” The free lecture will take place at 10:05 a.m. Sept. 16 in the university’s Samuelson Chapel.

Among other events, the school will put on the musical “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown,” which will open at 8 p.m. Oct. 31 in the Preus-Brandt Forum. Tickets will cost $8.

Tan, author of the “Joy Luck Club,” which was made into a movie, will present “A Morning With Amy Tan,” a free event at Samuelson Chapel at 10 a.m. Nov. 11.
