Pitcher Keith Evans, formerly of Crespi and Chaminade highs, has come to terms with the Montreal Expos and will sign after returning from vacation, his mother, Janell Evans said.

Evans, a 6-foot-5 right-hander from Cal, was drafted in the eighth round in June, but negotiations stalled and he played this summer for Chatham, Mass., in the Cape Cod League.

Evans was 4-0 with a save and a 1.00 earned-run average for Chatham, which won the Cape Cod championship.

Classes began this week at Cal State Northridge without Jaeme Leal, one of the Matadors’ top recruits. Leal was recently ruled academically ineligible, said Coach Mike Batesole.

An all-state first baseman from Riverside Poly High, Leal was drafted in the 15th round by the Angels, but did not sign.

Cross-Country

Bill Tokar, a co-coach of the Ventura High boys’ and girls’ teams from 1985-90, will be the head coach of both programs this season.

Tokar replaces Hudson Scoggin, who stepped down from that position and from his job as head track and field coach to pursue other interests.

Scoggin and Tokar coached cross-country together from 1985 to 1990 before Tokar decided to pursue a master’s degree in human biomechanics at Cal State Northridge.

John Beattie, the Saugus High cross-country coach from 1989 to 1995, will take over the Ventura track programs with Scoggin remaining as an assistant.

Beattie was an assistant coach for the Occidental College track team last season after being the distance coach at Saugus from 1990 to 1995.

Track and Field

Satin Lewis, who finished third in the girls’ 300-meter low hurdles for Cleveland High in the 1995 and 1996 City Section championships, said she will attend Antelope Valley College.

Lewis posted a career-best of 45.31 seconds in the City Section final.
