SATURDAY: Trick and Treat

Cheap Trick is no cheap date as it will set you back $21.50 to see them perform their hits at the Ventura Theatre. With two decades of experience following their debut in 1977, Chicago-spawned Cheap Trick is far more successful than the Cubs, scoring with hit singles such as “Surrender,” “I Want You to Want Me,” “Dream Police” and “Ain’t That a Shame,” among others.

Second billed for the 8 p.m. show will be Epic Recording artist Suckerpunch, and a prime reason to be on time are the openers out of Thousand Oaks, Mummer, a very tight pop rock group with a couple of tapes to their credit. For more information, call the venue at 648-1888.

MONDAY: A Big Send-Off

The Conejo Recreation and Park District will bid farewell to its Summer Concerts in the Park & Performing Arts Series for another season when its presents a musical Labor Day celebration, pops-style, at Conejo Community Park.

The Conejo Pops Orchestra will return to the stage, guided by Howard Sonstegard, with featured guest vocalist Lynn Youngren. A varied program of works will include Sousa’s “Stars and Stripes Forever,” a medley of Disney favorites, selections from “West Side Story” and Ian Polster’s “That’s Entertainment.”

The program--a freebie--will commence at 5 p.m., and audience members are encouraged to bring their picnic baskets and nosh at will, but leave the pets at home. The park is at Dover and Hendrix avenues, Thousand Oaks. Call 499-4355 or 495-2163.

Put on Your Dancing Shoes

The city of Moorpark will throw a Labor Day party at Arroyo Community Park billed as a Family Picnic & International Fair.

The event will include the usual festival fodder, like arts and crafts displays and food vendors. Held from 3 to 7 p.m., the fair also will feature continuous live entertainment with performances by the Incan Ensemble, a traditional music and dance troupe, the Santa Rosette Cloggers, plus country music and line-dance instruction. “We will force the public to learn a dance,” said Moorpark recreation supervisor Shelly Shellabarger.

A long list of activities include games and crafts to keep the kids occupied, a makeshift mini golf course, a bike show, exotic animals from Moorpark College’s exotic animal training school and more.

UP THE COAST

Surfing enthusiasts take note: Author and surfing historian Sandra Hall of Honolulu will present a lecture about legendary surfer Duke Kahanamokku at Borders bookstore Friday.

Kahanamokku, a Hawaii native and Olympic swimmer, is credited with introducing Californians and Australians to the sport of surfing. Besides the talk, Hall will sign her book “Memories of Duke: The Legend Comes to Life” beginning at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free.

GLANCE AHEAD

Calypso crooner Harry Belafonte, who can be seen in Robert Altman’s jazzy “Kansas City,” will recast his ‘50s island hits--and no doubt more current material--Sept. 8 at the Civic Arts Plaza Auditorium.
