The first Unplugged Night at Linda’s Doll Hut two months ago was such a warm, spontaneous treat, so free of the slick conventions of video-channel unplugged-ness, that the little roadhouse is installing it as a periodic regular feature.

Friday’s session includes a reunion of the Swamp Zombies, the O.C. alternative band that made acoustic rocking cool back in the late ‘80s. The Crowd, O.C.’s longest-running punk band, will dump the decibels for the first time in its 18-year existence. Punk vet Mike Conley goes acoustic with other members of his latest band, Jigsaw, as will the roots-punk act Los Infernos. Jimmy Camp, one of the finds of Unplugged I, adds deep-rooted folk, country and blues.

Children’s Theater

This weekend brings a special treat for Roald Dahl fans: an outdoor staging of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”--the only nonmusical version of the book that was endorsed by the author--at Crown Valley Community Park Amphitheater in Laguna Niguel.

Presented by Classical Theater Productions/Laguna Niguel Community Theater under the direction of Alicia Butler, this two-act features local children and adults along with professional sets and costumes. BYO blankets and low chairs.

Art

Cameras without lenses are the chosen medium of photographer Peggy Jones, whose handmade tools and unusual one-of-a-kind prints are at Orange Coast College Art Gallery. Jones’ pinhole cameras range from carefully crafted wood and metal models to combinations of found objects and recycled materials. An interactive CD-ROM in the gallery explains how pinhole cameras operate.

Jones has a master of fine arts degree from UC Irvine and teaches at Orange Coast College in Costa Meaa.

Family Affair

Chain saw woodcarving, fudge-making and Chinese brush painting are among processes artisans will demonstrate this weekend at Harvest Festival Long Beach, where hundreds of costumed exhibitors will sell traditional and contemporary items. Highlights on the roster of continuous entertainment are Zydeco music by C.J. Chenier, juggling by Chad Taylor and puppeteers Ranka’s Revue.

Patrons who bring a canned or boxed food item will receive $1 off general admission.
