Paramount, Fledgling Radio Station on Same Wavelength

L.A.’s newest alternative rock station may alter its quirky advertising campaign because of publicity hounds in Paramount.

The City Council is considering making September “Y107 Month” in honor of 5-month-old Y107-FM (107.1). In exchange, the station has agreed to embrace Paramount as it’s kind of town.

While both sides predict that such an agreement would be mutually beneficial, station officials say it may force at least small changes to Y107’s regional billboard campaign, known to commuters across Southern California by the phrase “We’re not even famous in . . . ,” followed by such-and-such city.

At the least, Y107 marketing director Eileen Woodbury said, the station might want to rework its billboard along the 710 Freeway in Paramount.

“We may change that board to say, ‘Well, at least we’re famous in Paramount,’ ” she said.

City officials first contacted the station about the sign earlier this month. After preliminary negotiations, city staff members wrote a flattering resolution to honor the station that will be considered during Tuesday’s council meeting.

“It was just kind of a beneficial thing,” said assistant city manager Linda Benedetti-Leal. “Just kind of get our name out there and get their name out there.”
