Depth Chart Taking Shape

There will be a lot of meetings, some soul-searching and some commiserating today at UCLA, where freshmen and some upperclassmen in search of playing time will be told if they have found it.

The Bruins held an intrasquad scrimmage Wednesday at the Rose Bowl to put a period on the decision-making process for the depth chart.

They hope.

“I’ve told the freshmen that I won’t make a decision on red-shirting until the end of the season,” Coach Bob Toledo said. “You never know when you’re going to need somebody.”

Right now the Bruins need receivers. With Jim McElroy, Derek Ayers and Tod McBride sidelined because of injuries, UCLA has yet to develop the timing necessary to run its intricate passing offense, Toledo said.

“If some of these guys don’t get back on the field, they’re not going to be able to play against Tennessee,” he said.

In their places, players such as Rodney Lee and Danny Farmer are getting time.

Toledo said Lee would start if the Tennessee game were this weekend instead of Sept. 7.
