Bonds’ Motto: Only in God, Cash He Trusts

Share

The San Francisco Giants’ Barry Bonds and Matt Williams were discussing trust with Steve Marantz of The Sporting News.

Bonds: “I don’t trust anybody. I trust God.”

Williams: “You trust me.”

Bonds: “You’re crazy. I like you. I don’t trust you.”

Williams: “You trust me.”

Bonds: “Get out.”

Williams: “Don’t lie.”

Bonds: “I trust you to watch my bat.”

Williams: “Would you trust me to watch your kids?”

Bonds: “Oh yeah. ‘Cause you got money. ‘Cause I know how you are with your own kids. But you wouldn’t trust that man [Marantz] ‘cause you don’t know him.”

Marantz: “Right. You only trust other superstars.”

Bonds: “I only trust other people with millions. ‘Cause I know at least I’m going to get some money if something happens.”

Trivia time: Over the last two seasons, the Denver Broncos have done something unprecedented in the era of quarterback John Elway. What is it?

World by the tail: How big a success will golfer Tiger Woods be as a pro? It doesn’t necessarily matter, according to Washington Post columnist Michael Wilbon.

Writes Wilbon: “People who wouldn’t know a driver from a sand wedge know Tiger Woods when they see his picture. They might have to invent a new scale to calculate his Q rating. Even if he turns out to be a total bust, he might make $75 million or so before anyone figures it out.”

A league of his own: When 65-year-old Ted Marchibroda left the Indianapolis Colts after last season following a contract dispute, he wasn’t ready to hang up his headset just yet.

He was interested in coaching the Baltimore Ravens. That is, until Marchibroda heard owner Art Modell was talking about the job with Don Shula, the winningest coach in NFL history.

“That’s why I didn’t give Baltimore much thought,” Marchibroda said. “I [wouldn’t] compare myself to Shula.”

He didn’t have to. Shula turned down the job and it took Modell only 24 hours to offer it to Marchibroda, who was more than happy to accept.

Trivia answer: The Broncos have failed to make the playoffs in consecutive seasons.

And finally: Raider defensive lineman Pat Swilling, discussing the team’s injured quarterback, Jeff Hostetler, told the San Francisco Chronicle: “We want to learn to win without Hoss.”

They still haven’t, judging by Sunday’s 19-14 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.
