President Lauds Student Activists

A group of Santa Ana Unified School District students opposed to tobacco use were disappointed when they missed a phone call earlier this year from President Clinton. But they were heartened when they received a letter from him applauding their work.

The students, most of them in high school, were among 12 groups nationwide chosen to participate in a May 7 conference call with the president when he spoke out against tobacco use by young people.

But the president, speaking from New Jersey, placed the call early, and the Santa Ana youngsters, who had decorated a Century High School conference room with anti-tobacco posters, missed his remarks.

They turned their disappointment into a letter-writing campaign to the president outlining their work in Orange County and inviting him for a visit.

In a White House letter dated July 29, Clinton does not mention a possible visit but does thank the students for their letters and efforts.

“I’m glad to know that so many students in your area are aware of the risks associated with tobacco use,” Clinton wrote.
