Glendale soon will have a new message for day laborers, those men who stand at street corners hoping for a day’s work. The word: “Get off the street--and into the hiring hall.” . . . The city is earning praise for a new plan that will ban public solicitation while at the same time providing a hall in an industrial part of town where workers can gather. The dual approach goes beyond efforts that have been tried in other cities. Police and workers like the idea, and so does the ACLU (B1).

As any homeowner knows, leaky water pipes are a pain. Pity the poor DWP. Since the Northridge quake, city crews in the Valley have replaced 120,000 feet of water lines and relined with cement another 265,000 feet--a total of almost 73 miles. DWP spokesman Walter Zeisl said the work improves water quality and reduces waste. . . . He had no estimate of how many gallons have been saved.

Front Row Seat

For anyone seeking to get up close and personal to the political process, the county has a job for you. The registrar-recorder needs workers to operate polling places in the November elections. Inspectors earn $60 for the day and clerks get $45. . . . Oh yes, you must be registered to vote. Call (310) 462-2750.
