Remembering Church Artist

Share

The article “A Romantic Era Ends for Chapel in the Canyon,” Aug. 31, brought back some poignant memories for me.

I was privileged to have been a friend of David St. Denis, the artist who painted the magnificent oils that hang at the church. The first time I viewed them, in fact, was at his suggestion. Going through the rooms with him as my guide and listening as he told me some of the stories behind the paintings was an experience I shall never forget.

To the countless people who have admired the paintings, it may come as a surprise that David never took an art course. He was entirely self-taught. Although he passed away in 1987, it is comforting to know that his work continues to live on for so many to enjoy. I will always cherish the time I spent with David, and it’s good to remember that something he cherished and that was so much a part of him continues to live.
