Ten-year-old Adam Abundis has been appointed the first “mayor” of a local theme park after winning a writing and speech competition.

The Buena Park youth will serve as ambassador of the Stanton-based Adventure City for a year. Along with the title of mayor, Adam received a $1,000 savings bond and free admission to the park for a year.

He won the distinction in a writing and speaking competition that included 210 other young candidates.

Five other youngsters were chosen to serve as City Council members alongside Adam.

They are Patrick Gailey, 7, of Stanton; Adam Pavlakovich, 8, of Hermosa Beach; Amber Rocha, 9, of San Pedro; Jorge Pantoja, 12, of La Habra; and Matt Mendoza, 12, of Santa Ana.

The children will be awarded proclamations recognizing their appointments at an upcoming Stanton City Council meeting.

The park, designed as a miniature version of a city, is for children 2 to 12. It features rides, a puppet theater and educational exhibits, park owners said.

The park is at 10120 Beach Blvd.

“The concept behind Adventure City is to subtly teach children about the various functions of city life,” park owner Yvonne Ansdell said.
