Two men were arrested Tuesday evening on suspicion of robbery, assault and a hate crime after allegedly chasing and hurling racial slurs at a Latino man outside a supermarket.

Troy Waraocki, 19, of Lake Forest and Paul Robbertze, 21, of Rancho Santa Margarita were taken to Orange County Jail after sheriff’s deputies said they found the two hiding in an apartment attic across the street from the Lucky supermarket on Plano Trabuco Road.

Sheriff’s Department Lt. Lynn Nehring said the 31-year-old victim, whose name was not disclosed, was walking across the supermarket parking lot about 6 p.m. when he was confronted by the suspects, who had a pit bull.

The suspects chased the man across the parking lot to the front door of the market, making racial slurs and white-power statements, Nehring said. They allegedly struck the victim and took his wallet before running toward an apartment complex across the street.

Deputies found the two hiding in a friend’s attic and confiscated two more pit bulls at the apartment, Nehring said.

The victim was not seriously injured.
