Road Crew: Gov. Pete Wilson has appointed Valley business leader David Fleming to the California Transportation Commission. Fleming, 62, of Studio City, chairs the Economic Alliance of San Fernando Valley and is a trustee of the Cal State Northridge Foundation. . . . The Senate must approve the appointment.

First Bass: Charlie Haden, a veteran jazz bassist and faculty member at CalArts in Valencia, has been named Best Acoustic Bass player by Down Beat magazine. It’s not much of a surprise--he has won it 14 years in a row. . . . “That’s a lot of years,” said Haden, who also made the cover of Bass Player magazine last month. “I’m very proud. It means that you are appreciated.”

They’re Back: By attracting tons of hype and lengthy lines, above, Jurassic Park--The Ride has carried Universal Studios Hollywood to a record-breaking summer. . . . According to Universal officials, 2.5 million customers paid their way into the park between the ride’s opening on June 21 and Labor Day. That figure represents a 35% increase over last year and puts Universal on pace to surpass its annual record of 5.1 million guests, set when “Earthquake--The Big One” debuted in 1989.
