House OKs Bill to Sell Land to Tribe

WASHINGTON — The House approved legislation Wednesday to transfer federal land to an Indian tribe that plans to open a casino near Palm Desert, Calif.
Overlooking arguments by a rival tribe, the lawmakers agreed on a voice vote to support an agreement giving the Torres-Martinez Band of Desert Cahuilla Indians rights to purchase up to 11,800 acres as compensation for the flooding of almost 12,000 acres on their reservation in 1909.
The legislation faces an unclear fate in the Senate and must be signed by President Clinton before becoming law.
